Here are my photographs of the Sheffield General Cemetery which opened in 1836 (and closed for burial in 1978) and it is situated on Cemetery Road, It is a great cemetery with a Gothic style anglican chapel which was completed in 1850, the rest is classical and egyptian in style (egyptian gate, nonconformist chapel, catacombs, gatehouse & the registrar's house/office). There is a small wall called the dissenters wall which was built between 1848-50 and it was built to seperate the Anglican section from the earlier nonconformist section , unfortunately in 1980, 800 gravestones were removed and destroyed or used as paving to make more "green land" which is a real shame. These photos were taken over the 9th,10th & 16th of November 2003.
The cemetery is run down but has great character and just needs some loving care (and money)
There was a bronze statue of the poet James Montgomery in the rotunda but this was removed from it's prominent position to a new home in the grounds of Sheffield Cathedral
