Here are my photographs
of Craignethan castle situated near Blackwood on the outskirts of Glasgow.
The
Castle is a ruin but is a very nice place to visit with very friendly staff,
I would highly recommend a visit to anyone.
The castle was begun about 1530
by Sir James Hamilton of Finnart, The Hamiltons were fully behind Mary Queen
of Scots and after her abdication in 1567 she sheltered here in 1568, the collapse
of her cause led to the partial demolition of the castle's defences. In
the 1659 the castle was bought from Anne the Duchess of Hamilton by Andrew Hay
who had a new house built in the outer courtyard to live in when he moved out
of the Tower House in the inner courtyard.
The photographs were taken on the 20th of March 2005.
